Popov Alexander Andreevich was a well-known artist and experienced teacher, the head of the Odessa school, subsequently recognized as the best educational institution in the entire Russian empire. He painted portraits, landscapes and genre compositions, is one of the hundred best painters of Ukraine. Alexander Popov was born in 1852 in the Yaroslavl province. His works are in private collections in museums in Kiev and Odessa, Nikolaev, Riga, Ochakovo.
The painting "February" is painted in oil on canvas, its size is 40 * 60 cm. Popov depicts an interesting time of the year, the end of winter, when winter has ceased to fierce, and is preparing to hand over the reins to spring. Snowdrops will bloom very soon, frosts will recede, buds on trees will swell and the first grass will rise, birds will sing, and mushroom pickers will go on their first trips.
The artist shows the edge of the forest. It is strewn with white snow, giving off a blueness. Several logs are visible in this snow. They are the same size and processed, which indicates the presence of human activity. Most likely, trees previously grew on the edge of the edge. Small bushes and hemp are also visible from under the snow. In the background are many trees. All of them are naked, without a single leaf, dressed in a snow robe.
Their peaks, like tin soldiers, are directed upwards, which indicates calm weather. There is no snow storm, zaviruhi, in winter there is no need to fuss anymore, they are going for a well-deserved rest. In the foreground, trees are rarely traced, paths are visible between them, but in the distance a real thicket begins and all the trees are combined into one whole - the saying is true: "The farther into the forest, the denser the trees grow." The sky is blue, but gloomy. There are no sun rays in the picture, which may indicate that evening is coming.
