The painting “Portrait of Emil Zola” was written by Edward Manet in 1868, and was painted by the writer himself, who came to the master’s workshop several times a week for posing. Eduard Manet and Emil Zola were good friends, protecting each other from the attacks of the press and critics. It should be noted that the artist came to success precisely after presenting his portrait to the public, as well as several articles by Emil Zol on the work of his friend, then not recognized by anyone.
On the canvas, Emil Zola sits half-turned at the desk in a soft chair, he is thoughtful, his face is well lit, as is the book that the writer holds in his hands. Apparently what was read in a thick almanac is so interesting that the writer forgot about the world around him and now he comprehends what he has just learned.
The situation itself is thought-provoking - creative chaos can be observed on the table: the inkstand, stacks of books and papers practically do not leave any free space for anything other than what is already available. There is a plate and a spoon on the table right there, which creates the illusion that the writer often forgets about food and drink, so he puts them as close to the workplace as possible.
The walls are darkened, but the paintings and clippings adorning them are clearly visible, the viewer can see a part of the landscape depicting a bird on a branch, as well as another picture, or rather their cluster in one frame. On the walls, as well as on the table, is some kind of creative chaos whose location is well known to the author of the canvas and his pensive friend-writer.
Eduard Manet’s fears of dying in obscurity did not materialize, very soon he earned a well-deserved fame, and the portrait painted from Emil Zola began to be revered as one of the best in his portrait work during his lifetime, both the author himself and his main character.
