Description of the painting by Vasily Vereshchagin “Siege of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra”

The canvas of Vasily Petrovich Vereshchagin "The Siege of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra", written in 1891, depicts one of the most bitter periods in the history of our country. It makes no sense to talk about the events that took place at that time, called the "Troubles". The painting depicts an episode of the assault on the monastery, although the viewer does not see battle scenes. Quite the opposite. In the foreground, the audience appears alarmed, suffering, frightened, but at the same time inspired faces of people who are ready to die, but not betray their homeland and faith.

In fact, the artist was able to express the meaning of what is happening, using not quite familiar characters. The unity of the people and the clergy in a mournful hour in the person of a priest carrying a blessing and at the same time the fighting spirit of the laurel defenders, who carefully listen to the elder’s instructions and are ready to defend their land, all this is brought by the artist to the background of the picture. Compositionally, these elements are located on the left and right side of the canvas.

The central part of the composition, which is not even immediately evident against the backdrop of the bulk of the Orthodox church, is a group of laurel defenders carrying a wounded comrade. Each of these characters represents a different part of the society of that time. It was with this combination that the artist wanted to show the unity of all, as is now customary to say “social groups,” against the enemy. If you want, the union of all Russian people!

At the same time, the sorrow of the central composition does not diminish the positive picture. Despite the general grief, it is filled with many symbols, alluding to the upcoming positive changes. At the bottom of the picture, in its very center, the artist depicted an abandoned weapon, indicating that the war was imposed from outside. At the same time, the lower left corner of the picture shows a small, playing child, as a symbol of future peaceful life.

The canvas is painted in bright colors, which again indicates a positive outcome of the debilitating siege of the laurel. The spirituality of the Russian people, their unification at a difficult moment and the bright, even cloudy sky of the Motherland - these are the main thoughts that Vasily Petrovich Vasnetsov wanted to convey to the viewer.
