Description of the painting by Alexei Savrasov “Towards the end of summer, on the Volga”

Volga nature is a special northern nature. Well, in any case, those places that Savrasov depicted on his canvases are just the north of Central Russia, that is, Yaroslavl and the territories closest to this city. And the summer here is special - it can also be rainy, but it can be hot and even choking. Here on this canvas, the artist depicted an already harvested field. Haystacks have already been stacked, and the birds in the field are pecking at what the peasants have not removed.

A village is visible in the distance, and a mill rises nearby. The suffering season is over, which means that you can relax a bit. Managed to harvest before the weather. And the fact that it will rain on the canvas is noticeable - the clouds are already very stormy. August has generally been considered a forerunner of autumn since ancient times, although it is revered as a summer month. But if you recall the history, it was in September that the New Year was celebrated, at least until 1699, as it was. And then August was just the autumn month.

On the canvas, nevertheless, the main place is given to the sky. It is spelled out in detail. Clouds of different shades and blue behind them. And three haystacks in the foreground show how well the harvesting garbage went, sheafs of hay are on the stack. And a little to the side you can see Mother Volga, the nurse of Russia, with her waters, which, closer to the coast, seem blue-gray, and in the distance blue.

How many years the river has been flowing, but it does not cease to amaze with its grandeur and its wayward character. It may seem like a deep water, but it can get a little shallow. Previously, many peasants tried to settle closer to the water: there is work, and watering the fields will be provided. But because of their waywardness, often among the peasants, the crop perished from the floods or from drought, shallowing. We now have modern technologies, and they save us in the event of a flood, but then it was a real natural disaster and not everyone received salvation.

Savrasov described the moment when the harvest was over, and nature breathed a sigh of relief: people managed to remove everything that had been built up.
