How many painters wrote their canvases on this subject! How many paintings are exhibited in various world museums under this name. But this canvas of Velazquez simply amazes with its calmness and chastity. You still understand the most interesting thing that you depicted this topic, completely not knowing the true events, details. I lead to the fact that the reading of an important biblical episode is interesting, but erroneous through and through. Take at least their clothes.
Velazquez, not knowing how the Palestinians are dressed or the Jews dressed all the characters in his contemporary clothes. And the Baby is not at all in the manger, but on his mother’s lap. And the three wise men do look like three respectable city masters, and the only thing that betrays their mission is three covered cup-donors. And so, if it weren’t for these objects, one would think that this was a secular visit to a name day.
What remained true to the painter is the appearance of the Virgin Mary and the Baby. Humility, sweetness, a certain destiny of fate ... And the background of the canvas? Velazquez did not particularly draw it, but on the left corner of the canvas we see a landscape and it is depicted during sunset. Could it be Calvary? The very place of the execution of Christ. And here you are surprised at how the painter clearly and succinctly conveyed the whole path of Christ - from Christmas to the Resurrection. At the same time, only the clear mountain landscape illuminated by the setting sun speaks about the latter. The truth and the landscape turned out to be painfully European, because the author never saw the lands where Christ was born. And this suffered all the painters of the Middle Ages, not only Velazquez.
Nevertheless, the canvas is beautiful, although it seems dark. But as a bright light spot attracts the appearance of the Baby. His children's eyes are already thoughtful. It is surprising that Velazquez the Baby swaddled, did not give him room. When, like other authors, they tried not to swaddle him, to portray him as if open to the world.
