Description of the painting by Albrecht Altdorfer "The Battle of Alexander the Great with Darius"

1529 g.

The grand battle is depicted in oil on canvas by an equally grandiose artist. To create this masterpiece, Alddorfer did not need as much time as one might suppose by looking at the picture. Very rich plot, completeness and drawing a lot of details. Truly a great creation. After all, it was not in vain that this picture became a favorite work of painting for Napoleon Bonaparte and adorned the wall of his office for 15 years.

Powerful warriors come to the forefront of the picture, which are depicted in the mass by numerous figures. However, even in this mass one can distinguish on whose side superiority is. The Persians clearly begin to retreat. The glorious army of Alexander of Macedon, like a single wall, is menacingly approaching enemies, forcing them to experience horror and retreat. The great victory is depicted so beautifully and picturesquely that it simply amazes the imagination.

It is very remarkable that a large place in the picture is given to the sky. Huge, divided as if by two sides in color, it is depicted simultaneously with the sun and moon. As if the author contrasts each other with light and darkness, Persians and Russians. The sun in the sky is shown rising, its rays as if breaking through the darkness of a dark sky and give warmth and support to warring brave men. Since the picture is very rich in semantic plot, this is also expressed in the colors used by the artist.

Saturated, rich tones of red, green, blue, blue, yellow and various shades of brown colors prevail. This makes the picture even more attractive, grandiose and solemn. The general impression of the landscape is expressed in a kind of mute reverence for the significance of the historical event and the strength and power of the characters depicted.
