Description of the painting by Ivan Aivazovsky "Vesuvius"

The artist possessed the incredible bright talent that his nature endowed. It developed incredibly fast. This was facilitated by the circumstances, as well as the environment in which the future painter grew up.

The Black Sea, on the shore of which he lived, brought to his art the most vivid images. In his masterpieces, the sea seemed either incredibly joyful, overflowing with fabulous radiance, now gloomy. It was rarely calm. Most often, stormy waves and even whole shafts of foam, which with frantic force and a terrifying roar, fall on the rocks, face the viewer. Ships, as if made from shells, become a toy of this violent element.

“Vesuvius” is a sketch picture. Very often, Aivazovsky could create another masterpiece in just half an hour. The viewer has an incredibly wide panorama of the bay in Naples. In the distance we see a shore that descends to the sea and the already smoking volcano Vesuvius. It seems that a gloomy, but at the same time transparent haze enveloped everything around. The sun is already setting. The horizon is flooded with a pinkish-golden light. The expanse of the blue sea is truly fabulous. The whole landscape seems magical.

Vesuvius is the main detail of the landscape. This volcano is the only active in Europe, its mainland.

This picture creates a rather ambivalent mood. On the one hand, it is simply overflowing with gloomy shades. It seems that the mood should be equally hopeless. But at the same time, the landscape is so majestic and grandiose that it leaves a rather bright impression on the one who smokes at him.

Aivazovsky is a true master. It seems that we are about to hear the sound of waves and the roar of the wind. Not just hear, but even feel the movement of air and splashing waves. Such a magnificent image of the nature of Italy is only possible for such an artist who is able to not only portray, but also convey to the audience his attitude to what he saw and embodied on canvas.
