Description of the painting Isaac Levitan "Winter Road in the Forest"

Any artist has a sketchbook - this is such a folder where sketches, sketches or simply sketches of details for the future canvas are added. Many museums keep such sketches from da Vinci or from Monet. There are such sketches or studies in Levitan. Before us is one of these works, made in pencil on plain paper. When you look at this work for the first time, you think that it’s just some kind of mummies.

Although in fact this is just an interesting painting. But questions remain. If the forest, where are the trees? If the road, then where is it? In this figure, Levitan was able to designate with only a few strokes both the forest and the road, and even the presence of snow, so that there was no doubt that this was a winter sketch. How did he do that? This is purely the skill of the artist.

By simple gray-white stains, he designated the forest, and that no one doubted, a darker mass appears a little higher, for example fir or pine trees. And the road is indicated not by a straight line, but as if on a U-turn and on a corner of a turn, he depicted a Christmas tree.

Simple pencil lines let us know where the road turns and how it defines snowdrifts on the road. Now, of course, the paper turned yellow, but if you imagine it in its original form, then the presence of snow was noticeably noticeable. It is a black simple pencil that is capable of such voluminous and at the same time practically simple sketches. And colors are not needed - everything is extremely subtle and clear.

And such sketchy sketches from Levitan, and indeed any more or less famous artist, as a rule, are many. For example, Levitan has more than a thousand of them. Why are there so many? Simply, such a kind of rough work helped artists to find what they need or correctly portray a gesture, look, object. Incidentally, the same da Vinci long sought the look of the Mona Lisa, constantly making sketches.
