Description of the painting by Alexandre Benois “Cemetery”

Many of Benoit’s works are gloomy, gray, anxious. This distinguishing feature of the artist has always distinguished him from both modern and classical artists. His work is saturated with darkness and reflection, like paper with ink.

The artist Benoit in his youth was especially attracted and fascinated by the mysterious, shrouded in gloomy mysticism, subjects and motifs that the idol of the young artist - Arnold Beklin madly liked. It was during this dark period that the talented schedule began his work on the world-famous gloomy creations “Castle”, “Cemetery” and “Evening in Basel”.

In his work, Benoit decided to depict an old autumn monastery cemetery, reflecting sadness and pessimistic tendencies in the mood of the young artist Benoit. The old empty and cold cemetery was a symbol of darkness and mystery. However, his modern work was quite combined with the requests of the local public at the end of the century.

The author conveys her sad mood and mood with the help of a gloomy and refined coloring of the picture. The whole picture is divided into all kinds of shades and options for gray and black colors.

The color scheme ranges from silver and light ash shades, to dark blue, steel and almost black. Even a seemingly white light sky, made in the form of a background, is still shrouded in a haze of gray cemetery fog, an advanced feeling of dampness and rain.

Benoit pays particular attention to detailing trees. Pillars of thin gloomy birches are clearly drawn, in harmony with the image on the gravestone. Blurred ground, with fuzzy contours creates a feeling of moisture, as if it was just dripping from the sky a little rain. The picture quite realistically combines a gloomy mood, the colors and composition corresponding to it.
