Description of the painting “Is Alps” by Isaac Levitan

Levitan is called a “mood artist” and it is in this role that he is famous. He praised the Russian nature and nature in general, always preferred landscapes and was actually in love with the outside world, which is evident from all his works.

Among them are images of forests and fields, villages and rivers, and in the vast majority of paintings, people are absent as something that does not fit into nature. Levitan did not attach decisive importance to man - the maximum that was human in his paintings is the mood embedded in them. He could portray joy and hope for the best, he could portray sadness and longing. Could brush to describe the heart loving longing, could - expectation or fear.

"Alps" in his image is coldness and detachment. The picture is made in dark colors, only the sky and the fog on it are light. It is clearly demarcated within itself on several levels - the earth, green and covered with short grass, a strip of fog curling into fantasy stripes and swirls, then a low mountain range, so low that it can go down the hills, high violet mountains visible in the distance and above everything this high white sky.

No involvement, no interest is felt around the corner. They just eat and look at the world aloof and cold. All the shades in the picture are cold. Even green, which can be more than a warm shade, is cold here, to say nothing of the icy white fog, of the violet twilight of a distant ridge, of the sky. When you look at the picture, a feeling of mystery is created, as if you are looking into a secret corner where a person should not go. There are avalanches and wild animals, there is ice and cold, here you can’t walk a few miles without a guide.

Such can be the human soul - frozen ice, where it is better not to meddle without an invitation and where it is impossible to pass without a hint.
