Description of the painting by Edgar Degas “The daughter of Jephthah”

Oil painting on canvas. The artist painted it from 1859 to 1960.

Degas is a 19th century French artist. His real name at birth was Edgar Hélère Germain de Ha. In 1870, the artist decided to change his last name and attached the prefix de Ga. His canvases are known around the world, are included in the cultural heritage of France.

“Jephthah’s daughter” is one of the paintings that Degas painted according to the plot described in the bible. It says that a judge who was the ninth in Israel lived in the tenth century BC. He was also a military leader. He was born from the mother of a harlot. When his stepbrothers gave him an inheritance, he abandoned everything and went to live in Tov Desert. There he contacted the gang and became their leader. But his soul hurt for his homeland, which suffered from the yoke of the Ammonites. Unable to withstand it, the people of Israel decided to turn to Jephthah and prayed for help.

Ataman took pity on the people and promised to help overthrow the yoke. Before God, he vowed that if he defeats the Ammonites, he would sacrifice the first who leaves his house as a self-immolation sacrifice. Jephthah soon won, freeing the people of Israel. Then he remembered the promise to God. When he approached the house, his daughter stepped on the threshold.

Then Jephthah explained to her her future destiny. After which the daughter asked him to stay with friends in the desert to mourn her account. The father agreed, the daughter stayed with her friends, after which she was sacrificed.

This episode of the Bible causes a lot of controversy, because Christianity strictly prohibits sacrifice. Researchers argue that this information must be perceived differently. And Jephthah sacrificed his daughter, as a novice. She began to serve God and remained virgin.

It is not possible to find out more accurate information, since no one knows where the Israeli judge is buried, and there is also no way to trace his descendants.

The canvas is in storage at Smith College of the Art Museum. USA.
