Flavitsky Konstantin Dmitrievich is a Russian artist of the mid-19th century. He lived only 36 years, but in his short creative career he created masterpieces of world painting. The artist died of consumption, leaving his creative heritage.

For his work, Flafitsky was awarded honorary titles. The artist became famous thanks to his colossal works, which he wrote based on Christian sources.

Christian Martyrs at the Coliseum is a masterpiece of the historical genre. The canvas was created in Rome. Now it is located in St. Petersburg.

The painting depicts martyrs who will soon be executed for their faith by the Roman authorities. In the third, fourth century in the Roman Empire, it was nice to gather people for the public execution of all those responsible. Especially the Colosseum was crowded when Christians were executed. All the martyrs who accepted the faith and the cross, the emperor threw at the mercy of the hungry Lions.

There was no mercy for anyone: neither for women with infants, nor for the elderly. But the true martyrs, who believed in the power of the cross and savior, courageously accepted the terrible reality. After all, after that their souls gained salvation. Canvas Flavitsky makes us think about what people were ready for God's sake at the beginning of time. Everyone must make their feat in life, and each person has a different one.

The contrasts of shades are so masterfully conveyed in the picture. One of the first followers of the Christian religion awaits execution in this dungeon. The door is already open, which means that soon the martyrs will face brutal reprisals.

The Coliseum could accommodate 78 thousand spectators, who eagerly demanded execution, but gradually in Rome they began to realize that this entertainment was cruel and disgusting. By the end of the fourth century, executions of Christians had ceased.

The canvas is in storage at the State Russian Museum. St. Petersburg.
