The philosophy of Ancient Greece has always argued that our universe is a very complex structure and at the same time a beautiful structure, where each living and non-living object has its own role to play.
For example, a horse helps to carry and pull, a tank should be plowed, a dog - to protect the home and go hunting. As for man, his mission is to look, and with his gaze he must illuminate the whole world.
The artist Peter Bruegel was fond of Greek philosophy, so he embodied many philosophical ideas in his own works. It is as if such an abstract and invented cosmos comes to life in them, through images of nature, plants and animals. For example, his famous "Return of the herd."
The artist captured all living things in one color tonality - trees, shepherds and cows. On the one hand, people are responsible for their herd, but on the other hand, they are the same part of nature that must fulfill its own functions.
“The Return of the Herd” is one of the works of the cycle of the season. Up to now, only five works of art have survived from the cycle. The picture is dedicated to the month of November. The shepherds in the composition display all living things, display movement. All lines and images converge in drovers hurrying to get home before dark.
Bruegel in his past creations also tried to find images that could combine the vital element, a kind of movement, harmony in the ratio of the universe and man. Therefore, he laid the foundation of his work and the work of man. The image of the world in the artist’s painting has acquired features and details of his beloved homeland.
The meaning or function of a person’s existence consists in work, his work for the benefit of nature - this is exactly what Bruegel tried to express in his works and works.
