Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec belonged to a very famous aristocratic family in Paris, and his parents were always against his passion for painting. But I must say that Lautrec did not become an artist from a good life - because of a hereditary disease, he was small in stature, and therefore could not lead the usual way of life for aristocrats.
Painting became his outlet, and the world of the Moulin Rouge cabaret fascinated him, all the more there he was accepted as a normal person. Therefore, all the artist’s work was dedicated to the people of the Parisian half-world - after all, these were his only friends.
Toulouse-Lautrec painted a lot of genre scenes from the usual cabaret life. He captured one of them in a picture called "Dance at the Moulin Rouge." It depicts the dance of the two largest cabaret celebrities - a dancer nicknamed La Goulue, who had truly remarkable talents in the dance field, and her partner Valentin le Desoss, known as Valentin Beskostny.
Lautrec does not embellish his characters at all - their figures are executed in a grotesque, almost cartoon manner, a dance stage during which they are captured, for the most part devoid of grace. Around are Parisian bourgeois with well-fed and smug faces, among which you can find some Parisian celebrities of that time - almost all of them are made in the caustic satirical manner inherent in the artist.
Lautrec did not seek to reconcile the composition - his work is similar to snapshots, moments snatched from the stream of time and transferred to the canvas. The artist simply depicted on canvas and paper what he remembered thanks to his excellent memory. Some of the figures on the canvas were cut off for the reason that it turned out to be too large for the cabaret wall and was somewhat shortened.
