Description of the painting by Albrecht Durer “The Four Apostles”

The painting “The Four Apostles” depicts the apostles evangelists. From left to right, John, Peter, Mark and Paul are standing, very closely, on the same floor, representing a single whole. Unified both in composition and in aspirations. However, when comparing the apostles among themselves, they are completely different. John is tall, with a high forehead - he is already beginning to go bald.

In his hands he holds a book, looks out for something in it with a tense and slightly distracted face. It seems ugly - it happens with scientists who are overly passionate about something. He represents a sanguine character. Next to him, Peter, standing with his eyes fixed on the floor.

According to legend, Peter betrayed Christ, although he repented of this - on the night of Christ’s imprisonment, Peter was asked three times whether he knew this person, and three times Peter, who had previously sworn allegiance to him and was fanatical in his faith, answered “No”. In his pose one can see heavy thoughtfulness, quiet sullenness, as if oppressed by his guilt, he could not completely say goodbye to her. He is a phlegmatic. Next to him is Mark. Happily animated, he looks at the huge book that Paul is holding - most likely the Gospel - and is looking forward to the work ahead.

Praise the Lord, carry his word throughout the earth - to Mark this seems worthy of the application of all forces. Temperamental, he seems to be looking forward to the moment when it can already be started. He is a choleric.

Paul standing next to him is calmer. He holds the gospel in his hands, in his second hand he has the stick on which he rests. He is dressed in white and looks strictly and seriously, as if asking the viewer - what did their great campaign turn into? Did their people listen? Believe in God? He is a melancholy.

Despite the dissimilarity of the apostles, with completely different faces, they all look like believers and the same light illuminates them from within.

The light that came upon them after the ascension of Christ, and made them more than brothers.
