For a specific manner of drawing, Rousseau was nicknamed an amateur, although Picasso and his entourage admired his paintings. The reason for such unflattering reviews was the manner of Russo to paint his paintings.
The artist perceived the world absolutely at ease. This lightness of his did not find a reciprocal understanding in the views of critics, for whom Rousseau's paintings were too naive. Having completely abandoned strict academic rules, the master freed both his consciousness and his own work.
Such ease is present in the film “Customs. Here the artist depicted the place of his work. After all, as you know, Russo worked as a customs officer, which also greatly surprised the bohemian and the spectator.
The picture is inherent in light intensity and a clear outline of the shapes of the objects depicted. These characteristics have become significant for all the works of Rousseau. The artist very carefully studied the small details of the picture, for which he was accused of even greater naivety.
Canvas "Customs" is different from the impressionists of that time: Rousseau chooses two main colors and uses all kinds of shades. The picture is dominated by the predominance of green and black. Natural colors give the picture a realistic look. But portraying an ordinary day from a series of the same working weekdays, Rousseau was able to achieve the effect of alienation. It is as if everything that is happening does not concern himself or the viewer. It is like looking into a parallel universe where everything looks the same, but it’s not the same.
The canvas is full of confidence with which the artist applied strokes, and knowledge of the matter. Rousseau knew exactly what he was portraying: a vast world where man coexists with nature, as part of it.
Confidence of the author was caused by constrained means, because of which he had to immediately paint with oil paints without preliminary sketches of coal. Which in turn allowed Rousseau to boldly depict what he saw, creating a new work on canvas.
